  • FAQ
Q: Who can be on the team?
A: Team membership is only available to eligible students of Rockwood Summit High School.

Q: When are tryouts for the team?
A: We don't have tryouts but we do have minimum skill requirements for safety reasons.  The boys' team runs through the fall season with practices beginning in early August, before school begins.  The girls' team runs through the winter season with practices beginning mid-November.  Check out our calendar for specific dates.

Q: What are the minimum skill requirements to be on the team?
A: For swimming, athletes must be able to complete 50 yards of freestyle and 50 yards of backstroke without excessive stopping at the turn.  For diving, athletes must be able to complete one front dive, one back dive, and one dive from any other dive group.  Prior competitive swimming or diving experience is not necessary for participation.

Q: Are there any fees for participation with the team?
A: We do collect team gear fees at the start of every season.  These fees cover the cost of the team suit, cap, and shirt.  Athletes are expected to provide their own goggles, towels, practice swim suits, and water bottles.  We do not want these fees to be a barrier to participation so please speak with Coach Benson or Coach Rich for hardship alternatives.

Q: Is swimming and diving a varsity sport?
A: Yes, but we differentiate between Varsity and JV letter awards based on factors that are outlined in our team handbook.

Q: What times are practices held?
A: Practices are held immediately after school from 3:20-5:30 daily.  Practice times may vary when school is not in session.  The girls' team has practices over Thanksgiving break and Winter break.  Check out our calendar for more specifics.

Q: What happens if there is inclement weather?
A: Typically, if school is cancelled because of bad weather, then after-school activities are cancelled.  However, there are some instances where we will be allowed to practice depending on the situation.  If practice is cancelled or altered for any reason, we will communicate the change via the website, twitter, and email.

Q: How do athletes attend away meets?
A: All athletes are expected to ride the bus to and from meets.  Parents should speak to Coach Benson or Coach Rich if an exception must be made for unique situations.

Q: How long are the meets?
A: Typical dual meets last about 1.5 hours beginning around 4:00pm and ending around 5:30pm.  Invites, Conference, and State meets usually last longer, over two days.

Q: Are parents required work at team events?
A: No, but we do ask parents to volunteer for the big meets we host (running, awards, concession stand, etc).

Q: How do I know what event my swimmer is swimming?
A: On the day of each meet, you can go to the results page to find a lineup that lists the events for each swimmer.

Q: How do I find out the results from a meet?
A: For some of the bigger meets (invite, conference, etc), results can be viewed immediately using the free Meet Mobile app found in your device's app store.  For dual meets, I post the results online the day after the meet.

Q: Who should I contact if I have questions about the Swim and Dive Team?
A: Feel free to contact either Coach Rich or Coach Benson if you have questions about the team.  Additionally, you may also contact the Activities Office.
